AirDrop Not Working on macOS? Fix It Fast
AirDrop is one of the easiest ways to share files between Apple devices, but when it stops working, it can be frustrating. If your Mac isn’t sending or receiving files via AirDrop, here’s how to fix it — starting with a powerful Terminal command.
📡 Step 1: Reset Network Services Using Terminal
🖥️ Step 1: Open the Terminal App
- Press Command (⌘) + Space to launch Spotlight Search.
- Type Terminal, then press Enter to launch it.
2. Enter this command in Terminal
Copy the following command and paste it into Terminal, then press Return:
Click "Show Command" to reveal
This restarts the background services responsible for AirDrop. It often fixes AirDrop when devices appear invisible or connections won’t complete.
📶 Step 2: Enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
AirDrop requires both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to be turned on. Open Control Center from the menu bar and ensure both are active.
🧭 Step 3: Make Your Mac Discoverable
Go to System Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff. Set AirDrop to “Everyone” or “Contacts Only” and toggle it off and back on to refresh visibility.
📱 Step 4: Bring Devices Closer
Make sure your Mac and the receiving device are within about 30 feet (9 meters) of each other. Physical distance or metal objects can interfere with signals.
🔄 Step 5: Restart Both Devices
Sometimes, a simple reboot resolves temporary AirDrop issues. Restart your Mac and the other device (iPhone, iPad, or another Mac), then try again.
🧪 Step 6: Test in Safe Mode (Optional)
If AirDrop still doesn’t work, boot your Mac into Safe Mode. This disables third-party extensions that may be interfering. Shut down your Mac, then turn it on while holding the Shift key.
Tip: If you’re trying to send from iOS to macOS, make sure both devices are signed into iCloud and AirDrop is unlocked (screen on, device awake).
